What
is good parenting?
What is good parenting? Experts in parent coaching would
probably agree that good parenting means providing positive
and nurturing experiences for your child that build a
strong character and a sense of self-worth.
Have you ever heard the expression “we parent the way we
were parented”? To some extent this is true. However, as
a parent and a parent coach I have come to believe we are
more likely to use the way we were parented as a measuring
stick, barometer, or baseline than as a rigid template.
Some of us want to recreate our childhood for our children,
others want to run away from those memories as fast as
we can, and still others want some of what was good and
want to let go of what was not.
Many people express the desire for their children to have
time to, “just be kids”. They want their children to have
time to play, pretend, and create like they experienced
when they were children. Often parents also want to give
their children opportunities to be involved in activities
and programs that help prepare them for their future and
have the knowledge that they can do anything or be anything
they want. Perhaps, instilling them with something they
did not come away with in their childhood. Achieving the
balance can be difficult.

How do you do it? Well, fortunately every family is unique
and has unique ways of solving problems and sorting through
what is best for them. Unfortunately, there is no ‘one
answer fits all’. We have to ask questions about values
and meaning. We need to explore our ideas such as honesty,
respect, manners, self-discipline or courage and understand
what we believe about them. Do they bring us peace of mind…are
they a source of pride? We need to think about the legacy
we are going to leave your children. What will they tell
their children about their childhood experiences? Intentional
parenting takes intentional thought and decision making.
Whether you are a parent of a young child or a teen, it
is not too early or too late to think about these things.
There is no cookie cutter recipe for good parenting. It
has to mean something to you, and it needs to come from
you. Having a parent coach is way to stimulate new ideas.
Your parent coach will work with you to develop your own
personal style of parenting, methods that works for you,
designed with your values, ethnicity and culture in mind.
When you work with your parent coach you will create your
unique parent mission statement and learn to implement
the parenting style that works for you and your family.
You can’t change the past, but working with a parent coach
can have a huge impact on the present and the future of
your children for generations to come.
